When you think lilac, purple lilac is what most people conjure in their minds. Purple Lilac shrubs are commonly found near abandoned homesteads where pioneers planted them on their journey out west—so important to them was the feeling of ‘home’ this lilac provided. Expect large panicles of lavender flowers in late May/early June. Does well in alkaline soils, wind, and (once established) drought conditions. Excellent choice for a hedge, an informal screen, or part of a windbreak planting.
